Clocks are the only appliance in the home that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and 52 weeks a year. An eight-day clock in the course of 20 years ticks 630 million times and the springs or weights are wound 1,000 times. Any mechanical device that runs that much is going to need service every three to five years to keep it going. After 20 to 25 years years it usually needs rebuilding. We do service, repair and rebuilding of almost all clocks.
When a clock is serviced, it is removed from the case and the dust is cleaned out. If the old oil has gummed up, additional cleaning is required by the use of ultrasound cleaning. It is then re-oiled and the springs are lubricated. It is set to factory standards and timed for two or more days.
Repairs
The springs in a clock, when wound, have a tremendous amount of power. When they break, this power is released at once. The broken springs can do a significant amount of damage to gears, pivots and pinions (see below). If damaged, these need to be repaired or replaced. Over the last 70 years we have compiled a large inventory of American, German, French and English clock parts. Most of the clocks we repair are 75 to 200 years old. It is rare that we cannot repair a clock.
